چکیده

The electronic properties of liquid ammonia are investigated by a sequential molecular dynamics/quantum mechanics approach. Quantum mechanics calculations for the liquid phase are based on a reparametrized hybrid exchange-correlation functional that reproduces the electronic properties of ammonia clusters [(NH3)n; n=1-5]. For these small clusters, electron binding energies based on Green's function or electron propagator theory, coupled cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations, and density functional theory (DFT) are compared. Reparametrized DFT results for the dipole moment, electron binding energies, and electronic density of states of liquid ammonia are reported. The calculated average dipole moment of liquid ammonia (2.05+/-0.09 D) corresponds to an increase of 27% compared to the gas phase value and it is 0.23 D above a prediction based on a polarizable model of liquid ammonia [Deng et al., J. Chem. Phys. 100, 7590 (1994)]. Our estimate for the ionization potential of liquid ammonia is 9.74+/-0.73 eV, which is approximately 1.0 eV below the gas phase value for the isolated molecule. The theoretical vertical electron affinity of liquid ammonia is predicted as 0.16+/-0.22 eV, in good agreement with the experimental result for the location of the bottom of the conduction band (-V 0=0.2 eV). Vertical ionization potentials and electron affinities correlate with the total dipole moment of ammonia aggregates.

Dynamic polarizability, Cauchy moments, and the optical absorption spectrum of liquid water: a sequential molecular dynamics/quantum mechanical approach.

The dynamic polarizability and optical absorption spectrum of liquid water in the 6-15 eV energy range are investigated by a sequential molecular dynamics (MD)/quantum mechanical approach. The MD simulations are based on a polarizable model for liquid water. Calculation of electronic properties relies on time-dependent density functional and equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theories. Simulations of liquid ammonia based on the combined quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) approach.

Two combined quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) molecular dynamics simulations, namely, HF/MM and B3LYP/MM, have been performed to investigate the local structure and dynamics of liquid ammonia. The most interesting region, a sphere containing a central reference molecule and all its nearest surrounding molecules (first coordination shell), was treated by the Hartree-Fock (HF) and hy...

First-principles modelling of Earth and planetary materials at high pressures and temperatures

Atomic-scale materials modelling based on first-principles quantum mechanics is playing an important role in the science of the Earth and the other planets. We outline the basic theory of this kind of modelling and explain how it can be applied in a variety of different ways to probe the thermodynamics, structure and transport properties of both solids and liquids under extreme conditions. Quantum molecular dynamics simulations of the thermophysical properties of shocked liquid ammonia for pressures up to 1.3 TPa.

We investigate via quantum molecular-dynamics simulations the thermophysical properties of shocked liquid ammonia up to the pressure 1.3 TPa and temperature 120,000 K. The principal Hugoniot is predicted from the wide-range equation of state, which agrees well with the available experimental measurements up to 64 GPa. Our systematic study of the structural properties demonstrates that the liqui...

Combining quantum wavepacket ab initio molecular dynamics with QM/MM and QM/QM techniques: Implementation blending ONIOM and empirical valence bond theory.

We discuss hybrid quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics (QM/MM) and quantum mechanics/quantum mechanics (QM/QM) generalizations to our recently developed quantum wavepacket ab initio molecular dynamics methodology for simultaneous dynamics of electrons and nuclei. The approach is a synergy between a quantum wavepacket dynamics, ab initio molecular dynamics, and the ONIOM scheme. We utilize this...
